Bismuth subsalicylate

Bismuth subsalicylate is an antacid medication used to treat temporary discomforts of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, such as diarrhea, indigestion, heartburn and nausea

It is thought to limit secretions in the digestive tract, reduce inflammation in the stomach and intestines, and inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses that can cause intestinal tract diseases.

Do NOT use bismuth subsalicylate if:
  • you are allergic to any ingredient in bismuth subsalicylate
  • you are taking another salicylate medicine (eg, aspirin)

If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using bismuth subsalicylate during pregnancy. Bismuth subsalicylate is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking bismuth subsalicylate.
