Zika Virus Threat in Bangladesh

Zika virus disease (Zika) is a disease caused by Zika virus that is spread to people primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito.

Bangladesh confirmed on 22th March its first case of the Zika virus in an old sample of blood from a 67-year old man who had not been overseas, health ministry officials said.

"The virus was found in the man as we tested old blood samples of nearly 1,000 people afflicted with fever in 2014 and 2015," Mahmudur Rahman, director of the ministry's Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, told Reuters.

But Risk for Zika virus infection in Bangladesh is low as the countries affected by the mosquito-borne disease are far away, experts said today.
