OTC Treatment for Ringworm

Ringworm is a skin infection caused by different types of fungus. It's a more common problem in India-subcontinent. Most ringworm infections can be cured with over-the-counter antifungal products.

An infection with these fungi is medically known as dermatophytosis. Skin fungi can only live on the dead layer of keratin protein on top of the skin. They rarely invade deeper into the body.

OTC treatment

Most ringworm infections can be cured with over-the-counter antifungal products. Topical antifungal drugs such as clotrimazole, miconazole, and tolnaftate are very effective in treating ringworm.

Prevention

  • Good personal hygiene helps prevent the spread of ringworm. Teach your child to practice good hygiene and generally not to share combs, brushes, or hats. Children also shouldn't share towels, clothes, or sports equipment that hasn't been properly cleaned.
  • Ringworm also can be transmitted from an infected dog or cat, so avoid animals who look mangy or have bald spots in their coats. If you have an animal that you think may have ringworm, take it to your veterinarian for treatment.
