Generic name: Gabapentin
Manufacturer: Opsonin Pharma

Gabapentin (Gpentin®) is a medication originally developed for the treatment of epilepsy. It is structurally related to the gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA). Now a days, it is widely used to relieve neuropathic pain.

Mode of action:
Gabapentin (Gpentin®) binds to the a2g subunit of the voltage-dependent calcium channel in the central nervous system; thus it inhibits the voltage gated Ca2+ influx in DRG (dorsal root ganglion) neurons to enhance the anti-nociceptive action. It also offers a protection against seizure by increasing the brain GABA in patients with epilepsy.

Neuropathic pain (diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia etc.)

Partial seizure/epilepsy: Adjunctive treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization not satisfactorily controlled with other antiepileptics.

Side effects:
Generally Gabapentin (Gpentin®) is well tolerated but a few side effects like fatigue, dizziness, ataxia, weight gain, peripheral edema, dry mouth and somnolence, may occur.
